How it works

What interior drainage systems is and when it's the right call.

The system works on gravity, not pressure. Hydrostatic pressure outside the foundation pushes water through the cove joint. The seam where the slab meets the wall, and through any cracks, form ties, or porous block cells. Instead of trying to stop that water at the wall (which exterior membrane work attempts and which is 40 to 60 percent more expensive in NE/IA soil conditions), interior drainage accepts the water at the wall and gives it a low-resistance path out. The perforated 4-inch PVC sits in 4 to 6 inches of clean drainage rock at footing elevation. The pipe slopes a minimum 1/8 inch per linear foot toward the sump pit. Water enters the pipe through the perforations, runs by gravity to the pit, and the sump pump. Typically a 1/3 or 1/2 horsepower cast-iron pump on a tethered float. Discharges through a 1.5-inch or 2-inch line to an exterior daylight outlet or pop-up emitter at least 10 feet from the foundation. A clean-out tee at each corner lets the system be flushed every 5 to 10 years to clear iron-ochre buildup, which is common in eastern Nebraska groundwater. Exterior waterproofing stops water before it reaches the foundation. Better in theory, but requires excavating 8 feet down to the footing around the entire perimeter, which destroys landscaping, threatens close neighbors' yards, and risks brick or stone veneer above grade. Interior drainage takes the water that exterior membrane would have stopped, and routes it out. The wall still gets wet. Interior drainage doesn't waterproof the wall itself, but the basement stays dry.

Interior Drainage Systems explained by Epp Foundation Repair
Installation Process

How we install interior drainage systems.

Step 01

Inspect, Diagnose, Identify Sump Location

Dave Epp or a senior Epp Foundation Repair technician inspects the basement, marks active leak points, measures slab elevation at multiple corners to find the lowest point, and identifies where the sump pit will sit. The discharge route to the exterior. Through the rim joist, a window well, or an existing penetration. Gets confirmed before any concrete is cut.

Step 02

Mark Trench Routing, Protect Finishes

The trench routing runs along the interior perimeter, hugging the wall at the cove joint. Crews mark the saw-cut line, protect finished walls, HVAC equipment, water heaters, and any stored items with poly sheeting, and set up dust containment for the slab-cutting phase.

Step 03

Cut Slab, Excavate Trench

A walk-behind saw cuts a 14- to 16-inch-wide channel through the basement slab along the perimeter. Crews break out the concrete, haul it out, and dig the trench down to footing depth. Typically 12 to 18 inches below the slab. The footing surface stays untouched. Excavated soil gets removed from the basement.

"Interior drainage is the right call for 7 out of every 10 wet basements I see in Nebraska and Iowa. The soil here. Loess across the eastern half of the state, glacial till north of the Platte. Holds water against a wall for two to three days after a rain. You can fight that from outside with a $25,000 excavation and a membrane, or you can accept it at the cove joint, drop it in a pipe, and pump it out for $7,500. I've installed this system in homes from 1910 limestone basements in Omaha to 1995 poured walls in Lincoln subdivisions. It works the same way every time, and the lifetime transferable warranty backs it."

Epp Foundation Repair prices interior perimeter drainage at $50 to $120 per linear foot of perimeter, including sump pit and pump. A full-perimeter system on a typical 80- to 120-foot basement runs $6,000 to $10,000. Partial systems. Addressing one or two walls only. Start around $3,000. Pricing varies with slab thickness (homes built before 1960 often have 6-inch slabs that cost more to cut), basement access, finished-wall demo and restoration, and discharge routing complexity. Written estimate after on-site inspection reflects your scope.
