Cast-Iron Crawl Space Sump Pumps Engineered For Low-Clearance NE And IA Crawls
Epp Foundation Repair has installed sump pumps in tight NE and IA crawl spaces since 1994. BBB A+ accredited, two-time Integrity Award winner.

What crawl space sump pumps is and when it's the right call.
A crawl sump works on simple hydraulics. Water flows downhill to the lowest point in the crawl, collects in the pit, and triggers a float switch when it rises 6-8 inches. The pump runs until the basin drains, then shuts off. The crawl-specific engineering matters because access constraints and humidity change the equipment list. Cast-iron motor housings resist the corrosion that kills plastic pumps in NE and IA crawls (Dave Epp has cut open 4-year-old plastic pumps with rust-through on the motor casing). The pit basin gets perforated sidewalls so water enters from any direction across the crawl footprint, not just from one wall. The discharge line runs through a check valve to stop backflow when the pump cycles off, then exits through the foundation wall to an exterior termination at least 6 feet from the house at proper grade. A dedicated 15 to 20 amp circuit (homeowner coordinates a licensed electrician) keeps the pump off shared loads.
How we install crawl space sump pumps.
Crawl Inspection And Low-Point Mapping
Epp Foundation Repair maps the crawl floor elevation, identifies the natural low point where water collects, and confirms there's enough clearance for pit excavation and basin installation. In low-clearance crawls under 30 inches, Epp uses scaled-down basin liners and shorter discharge runs to keep the system serviceable.
Pit Excavation Through Dirt Floor
Epp crews excavate a pit at the crawl's low point. 22 to 26 inches deep, 20 to 22 inches wide. By hand using short-handle shovels and 5-gallon bucket extraction. Crawl access constraints make this slower than basement work; a typical crawl pit takes 2-3 hours to excavate where a basement pit takes 45 minutes.
Basin Liner Installation
An 18 to 24 inch perforated polyethylene basin liner gets set in the pit with the rim 1-2 inches above the final vapor barrier elevation. Pea gravel backfill around the basin allows water to enter from any direction. The liner sidewall perforations are positioned to draw from the full crawl footprint.
"I've pulled rusted-through plastic sump pumps out of crawl spaces in Lincoln and Omaha that didn't make it five years. Cast iron in our humidity is the only spec that holds up, and putting the basin at the actual low point of the crawl, not just the closest spot to the wall, is what makes the system pull water from the whole footprint instead of one corner."

Crawl Space Access Well
Epp Foundation Repair installs below-grade access wells that keep your crawl space entrance from collecting water, soil, and debris. A clean opening makes inspections, repairs, and routine checks far easier.
Learn moreProprietary Solutions
Not every crawl space needs the same parts. Epp Foundation Repair installs engineered, brand-name systems for encapsulation, drainage, and support, then matches the pieces to what your crawl space actually has wrong. The point is the right system, not the fanciest label.
Learn moreControlling Moisture
Epp Foundation Repair has diagnosed and corrected crawl space moisture across Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri since 1994.
Learn moreCrawl Space Doors
An encapsulated crawl space is only as tight as its access point. Epp Foundation Repair installs sealed, insulated access doors that close off the entry where moisture, pests, and cold air sneak back in.
Learn moreCrawl Space Drainage
Epp Foundation Repair has built crawl space drainage systems across Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri since 1994.
Learn moreCrawl Space Jacks
Bouncy, sloping floors usually trace back to overspanned or weakened framing in the crawl space below. Epp Foundation Repair sets adjustable steel jacks on engineered footings to carry the load and stop the movement. Our goal is permanent stabilization, with some lift possible depending on conditions.
