What slab & mud jacking is and when it's the right call.
Mud jacking solves a void problem. A concrete slab is heavy but rigid, so when the soil beneath it settles or washes away, the slab loses its support and drops or tips toward the empty space. In eastern Nebraska and western Iowa this happens for predictable reasons. Expansive clay shrinks as much as 10 to 15 percent in volume when it dries through a hot summer, water lines and downspouts erode fine soil out from under the edge of a slab, and 50 to 70 freeze-thaw cycles a year work loosely compacted fill until it consolidates. The slurry Epp pumps is a flowable mix of cement, sand, and water. Crews drill holes roughly 1.5 to 2 inches across in a grid across the slab, then pump the mix through a hose under pressure. The first job of the slurry is to find and fill every void under the slab, because an unsupported slab will crack again no matter how level it looks. Once the gaps are full, continued pumping builds pressure under the slab and lifts it. The crew watches the slab edge against a string line or laser and stops the moment it reaches the target. The slurry then cures into a firm, load-bearing base. Lift is gradual and measured in fractions of an inch at a time, which is why Epp frames the goal as stabilization with lift as a likely bonus rather than a promise. The injected mix is heavier than the polyurethane foam Epp uses on lighter slabs, so mud jacking is best for slabs that sit on reasonably firm fill and need a solid base under them. The drilled holes are patched with concrete grout and the slab is usually safe to walk on within a day, with full vehicle loads after the slurry has set.
How we install slab & mud jacking.
Inspection and Slab Assessment
Epp Foundation Repair measures how far each slab section has settled, checks for the cause such as a leaking downspout or eroded edge soil, and decides whether the slab is sound enough to lift. A slab broken into several loose pieces or crumbling at the edges is flagged for replacement instead, and Epp explains why before any pumping begins.
Drilling Injection Holes
The crew drills a grid of small holes, roughly 1.5 to 2 inches across, through the slab. Hole spacing depends on slab size and how much it has dropped. Holes are placed to reach every void so the slurry can fill the whole space beneath the panel.
Slurry Injection and Controlled Lift
A cement-based slurry is pumped beneath the slab under pressure. The mix first fills voids, then builds pressure to raise the slab in small increments. The crew tracks the slab against a laser or string line and stops at the target height to avoid overlift or cracking.
Hole Patching and Cleanup
Once the slab reaches its target, the drilled holes are patched with concrete grout tinted to blend with the slab. The crew cleans the site and reviews the result with you, noting any drainage issue that caused the settling so you can correct it and protect the repair.
"Mud jacking is a great fix for a slab that's still in one piece. If it's cracked into five chunks and crumbling at the edges, I'll tell you to replace it instead of pumping good money under bad concrete."
